Role of Women in Early Alabama Baptist Higher Education

The Alabama Baptist newspaper posted, "The Alabama Baptist and women: Contributions of early Alabama Baptist women chronicled, praised," on December 13, 2017.  The article by Elizabeth Wells includes sketches of two Baptist institutions, Judson Female Institute founded in 1838 (now, Judson College) and Howard College founded in 1841 (now, Samford University).  

Both Judson and Samford offer additional historical information on their respective websites.

Memories of Shurtleff College that Closed 60 Years Ago: 1st College in Illinois

The Telegraph of Alton, IL published an article this week commemorating the closure of Shurtleff College, " Shurtleff College, opened in 1827, closed 60 years ago ."  The author, Tom Emery, provides an interesting historical sketch.  The instit ution  evolved from Rock Spring Academy or Rock Springs Seminary in Rock Springs, IL which closed in 1831 and moved to Alton. It was initially known as Alton Seminary or Alton College before the name changed to Shurtleff College in 1836. Classes were suspended after 1956, though institution didn't officially close for several years permitting several students to complete degree requirements. The campus was taken over by Southern Illinois University and for use as an offsite center until SIU-Edwardsville opened in 1972. Part of the Shurleff campus site is now used by SIU Dental School. Shurtleff College is considered by some to be the first college in Illinois and the first founded between the Alleghenies and the Mississippi River....

Bay View College Flourished before Closing 100 Years Ago

Murphy Givens, retired editor of Corpus Christi's The Caller Times authored two fascinating articles this past week on Bay View College.  Bay View opened in 1894 and ultimately closed one hundred years ago in 1917.  The articles reflect Givens' talent as a story teller as he weaves together information about the founding of the institution and its importance to the region. The first article, " Bay View College opened in hard times ," was published on December 12, 2017.  It was followed on December 15, 2017 by " Portland's Bay View College closed 100 years ago ."
