Impact of Significant Fires at Indiana University

Ava Dickerson posted "1883 Fire!" on the Indiana University Archives blog, Blogging Hoosier History.  Her historical sketch describes the financial and cultural significance of the fire and how the citizens of Bloomington rallied to support the institution.


















Fires are often significant parts of institutional history and an earlier post on June 22, 2016, "A history of IU fires," describes a number of fires on campus.

Mount Ida College Trustees Announce Closure

The Board of Trustees of Mount Ida College announced today that the institution will close and agreement has been reached for acquisition of the campus by the University of Massachusetts .  The Mount Ida website includes statements from the trustees and the institution's president, Barry Brown, along with an F.A.Q. section for students and others interested in learning more about the agreement. Mount Ida was founded in 1899  on Mount Ida Hill in Newton Centre, MA by George Franklin Jewett and Abigail Faye Jewett .  It closed during the Great Depression and  was reopened by William F. Carlson and his son F. Roy Carlson in 1939.  Mount Ida was accredited as a junior college in 1961.  It merged with  Chamberlayne Junior College in 1987 and the New England Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences in 1989.  Mount Ida offered baccalaureate programs after 1998 and graduate degrees after 2009. Troubled Morthland College Announces Closure

Morthland College, a small non-profit institution in West Frankfort, IL, announced that it will close.  The school held its first classes in 2011 and enrolled roughly one hundred students.  The college mission indicated that it offered a liberal arts education with "...founding principles rooted in the centrality of Jesus Christ...recognizing the Christian foundations of our country..." WSIL-TV of Carterville, IL offers a short video and article on May 26, 2018 with reporting by Andrew Feather, " Morthland College to close ."   The post includes a copy of the release from Morthland announcing the closing.  Feather also notes that "...   year of bad news for the school, which included federal investigations, tax liens and hefty fines.Financial problems began at the college last year when it’s access to federal aid was cut off following an internal review by the Department of Education."  He adds that a year ago while the school owed the IRS $700,000 an...
